Tutor in the Spotlight ....

Paul Priestley

Paul was the Head of the Art Department in a Southend School for over 10 years, before moving to Herefordshire where he established his own business “Filbert Arts” several years ago.   We invited Paul to give us a further insight into the courses that he tutors at Farncombe.

Q. Paul, how long have you been tutoring courses in this subject?
A. I have taught art in schools for over 25 years. I have run my own business running art courses for adults for more than five years.

Q. Where else do you teach on a regular basis?
A. I teach in numerous venues in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire.

Q. Who might find your courses most appealing?
A. Anyone who feels they lack confidence in drawing and painting and those who wish have more experience but who wish to move out of their comfort zones.

Q. Do you think there are common misconceptions about the subjects that you offer? A. Yes, British people tend to under-estimate their own abilities! Anyone who can hold a pencil or a brush can draw and paint assuming they have the motivation and the right support.

Q. What do you think someone gains from attending one of your courses?
A. The confidence to have a go. All my demonstrations and the tasks I set are broken down in to easily achievable goals so that over a weekend students can make remarkable progress because they are building on success.

Q. Why is a short weekend course better that other course formats?
A. There is more time to develop ideas without large gaps in between which often leads to elements being forgotten. The residential element gives the flexibility of being able to discuss work/issues in a relaxed way away from the painting studio.

Q. Would you recommend any good books on the subjects that you teach?
A. Books can be useful for students, but you do not learn how to drive a car by reading a book!

Paul will next be teaching at Farncombe

He will also be giving an Impressionist Painting Demonstration at our Open Day on 13 September. He is also tutoring courses in the 2010 programme.

If you would like more details about his courses or to book, please email us or call 01386 854100
