Our Tutors

Karen Tweed & Reg Meuross

Karen Tweed is known for her mercurial accordion playing with such luminaries as Kathryn Tickell, The Poozies, SWAP, The Two Duos Quartet and Timo Alakotila. She is a regular music tutor on the Bmus Degree in Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, The MA and BA courses at The World Academy of Music and Dance at Limerick University and also at the Music Department at Sibelius Academy, Helsinki. She's an influential force on the UK music scene and as a highly regarded teacher and mentor she is an inspiration to the next generation. And then there's Karen Tweed solo artiste: an intimate sharing of music and nattering with one of our most charismatic and witty, elegant and enchanting performers. Karen invites us to join her on an uplifting, personal musical journey exploring her roots in the Irish tradition, mingled with tunes from Scandinavia and England, her own beautiful and moving compositions plus a few surprises…she has a box-full of treasures to share. Passionate, whacky, gorgeous: Karen Tweed artfully repaints a whole new landscape for the accordion…her magical touch and stunning musicality always breaking accordionesque preconceptions and boundaries. Dazzling!

What's not known about her is that she is a trained graphic designer and graduated with a BA Hons degree in Graphic Design from Leeds Polytechnic. She has designed many CD covers, her own Irish tune book and runs courses in drawing and printmaking in Lincolnshire.

Reg Meuross had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Kate Rusby, Seth Lakeman, Fairport Convention and Eliza Carthy at the Teenage Cancer Trust fundraising
concert at the Royal Albert Hall in March (see pic) and was introduced on stage as "one of the finest songwriters this country has produced."

Reg has, for nearly two decades, carved himself an awesome reputation as one of the UK's most talented musicians. He was half of the Panic Brothers and for many years toured with Hank Wangford's Lost Cowboys. An
engaging and charismatic performer, he released his first solo CD The Goodbye Hat, in 1996 and then in 2004 came back with Short Stories and Still just three years later to widespread critical acclaim.

He tours solo with his "Songs & Stories" show and has worked with many other top folk and acoustic artists including Jackie Oates, Phil Beer, Beth Porter and most recently, ace accordionist Karen Tweed. There are plans to record the next album at Phil Beer's studio soon…

Dragonfly, Reg's fourth solo CD became a popular choice on Mike Harding's programme when it was released last year - And Jesus Wept, the story of Private Harry Farr, the first WWI Soldier executed for "desertion" to receive a pardon,
proved to be not only Mike's but listeners favourite too, provoking tremendous reaction and requests to hear more! Dragonfly features 14 beautifully crafted, moving and powerful songs, based on true stories from the past and contemporary life; songs which will surely join the repertoire of many a modern-day folk-singer.

'Great thing about Reg is that he's a mighty songwriter and an equally good
singer'. - Martin Carthy
