Our TutorsAlison Crum & Roy MarksAlthough Roy Marks played the piano since childhood and the guitar since adolescence, it was as an artist that he always considered his vocation to be. Roy studied at the Royal Academy in London and for many years taught painting and drawing in adult education. In his late thirties however, upon hearing someone playing Telemann, he put down his brushes and has since devoted himself almost entirely to Early Music, studying first the recorder, then the viol and, latterly, the lute. As well as teaching and performing, Roy also composes music for period instruments, some of which has been performed and recorded. Alison Crum has earned world renown as a viol player and teacher. She studied with Wieland Kuijken and Jordi Savall, and has made over eighty recordings mostly with the Consort of Musicke, the Dowland Consort, Musica Antiqua of London and the Rose Consort of Viols. President of the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, Professor of Viol at Trinity College of Music, and a visiting teacher at colleges and universities in Europe and the USA, Alison has been called the 'doyenne of British viol teachers'. She directs summer schools and workshops worldwide, and her highly acclaimed book, 'Play the Viol', is published by Oxford University Press.
