Emma & Peter Worley
Peter Worley read philosophy at University College London graduating in 2000. He then went on to train as a philosophical counsellor with the Society for Philosophy in Practice (SPP) whilst completing an MA in philosophy at Birkbeck College. Emma and Peter set up The Philosophy Shop in order to teach philosophy in primary schools, and now have consultants working in schools nationwide. These include primary and secondary, working with both teachers and children helping to improve the thinking ethos in schools.
The Philosophy Shop has run adult philosophy courses for the past two years, which are discussion-led and make use of cross-discipline methods for communicating philosophical ideas such as film, literature, poetry, music and art. Inspired by Socrates’ dictum: “The unexamined life is not worth living” they firmly believe that philosophy can genuinely help with life’s big – and smaller – questions.
Peter has delivered presentations about philosophy in schools at Kings College London, University of Hertfordshire, Birkbeck College, the SPP, the Lewisham Deputy Head Teacher’s Conference, the Independent Schools Council, and the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. He has been published in Philosophy Now, Teach Primary and Teaching Thinking and Creativity and was among the winners of the Teacher’s TV competition “Tomorrow’s Teacher”. The Philosophy Shop has been written about in the Times Educational Supplement, Primary Teacher’s Magazine, The Daily Mail, The Independent, The Observer and the BBC education website, and Peter was interviewed on the BBC World Service about philosophy in schools with A.C. Grayling.
