Our TutorsMike BoyesMichael Boyes was born in Sri Lanka, returning to England at the age of 9. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained a degree in history, economics and psychology. He joined Rolls Royce in Bristol as a personnel graduate trainee, and later rose to become personnel director for major subsidiaries in two other companies. His public speaking skills were first tested in labour disputes during the troubled 1970s. Michael has always retained an interest in history and photography, and after retiring early he wrote his first book in 1997. A Cotswold Village School from Victorian Times was well received, and its success led Michael to continue researching and writing social history and biography. His persistence, combined with his passion for his subject, led him to unearth many unpublished documents and photographs belonging to the Revd Robert Le Marchant and his extensive family. After eight years of research, Michael completed the first of his two books on the life and times of the Le Marchant family. A Victorian Rector and Nine Old Maids was published in 2005 to widespread acclaim. A sequel about the lives of five Le Marchant brothers – Dying for Glory: The Adventurous Lives of Five Cotswold Brothers – followed a year later and also received excellent reviews. Michael has lived in the Cotswolds with his family for 20 years, and gives regular talks to literary societies and other interest groups.
