Jan Gardiner

Jan has been studying lace and lacemaking for 20 years, during which time she has obtained the City and Guilds Creative Lacemaking at Camberley in 1989 and several Lace Guild Assessment awards. She has been teaching lacemaking on a regular basis since 1986, both in the UK and the USA.

Over some 15 years Jan has designed a wide range of traditional patterns for other lacemakers to buy and make. Several of Jan’s traditional designs have been accepted for publication by two international lacemaking magazines, Lace Express (Germany) and La Encajera, (Spain) as well as The Lace Guild’s magazine ;’Lace’.

Jan has explored many avenues for designs in lace both traditional and contemporary.
A recent area for exploration has been lace made as an expression of her emotions. In this area she has experimented with other methods of achieving a lace-like fabric without the use of traditional manufacturing techniques.

In 2000 Jan held a one woman exhibition in the Creasey Gallery in Salisbury that illustrated her experiences and skills in lace.

As part of the ‘98 Lace Group’s exhibit several pieces of her work on show at the OIDFA International Lace Congress 2002 in Nottingham.

A piece of her 3 dimensional work, ‘Trails of Life’, won the ‘Pathways of Our Threads’ competition at the Pacific North West Lacemakers’ Conference held at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in June 2003.

Recently Jan has designed and made jewellery using bobbin lace techniques in machine embroidery threads, enamelled copper wire, and precious metal wire. Many of these items have been embellished with beads. The culmination of this was the ‘Arbores Collection’ of jewellery which was launched at the Contemporary Textiles Fair at Teddington, London.

Currently Jan is working with clients to produce jewellery as commissions.
