Play Jazz - Small Group Workshop (All instruments)
Start: 27 August 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
Sorry, this course is now FULLY BOOKED, please contact us if you wish to be put on the waiting list This course provides you with opportunity to spend a weekend playing jazz in a small group setting; rhythm section and front line. We will rehearse a number of arrangements of popular jazz pieces, discuss and employ useful approaches to improvising on them and then touch on the subtleties of group interaction within a jazz ensemble. Theoretical and even historical elements may be introduced as and when appropriate but the emphasis is on playing and having fun! This workshop is open to all musicians but pianists, bassists and drummers are especially welcome.
Individual instrumental tuition is beyond the scope of this course. For this reason, while you do not need to have had any previous experience in jazz improvisation, you are required to have a basic command of your instrument in order to gain the most from the course.
For wind and string players this means knowing major scales (up to 3 sharps and flats, at least) and having basic reading skills; being able to match the notes on the stave with the fingering positions.
For pianists you should either be able to read written notation OR be able to play basic chords from chord symbols.
Drummers should know basic groove patterns in swing and simple Latin grooves. E.g, Bossa.
Bassists should either be able to read written notation OR create a walking bass line from chord symbols.
Please note that we only have 1 piano available at the centre which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you wish to play the piano and it is not available you are asked to bring your own keyboard Suggested Links:Farncombe Estate is not responsible for the content of external links.
