Painting & Drawing

Pastels for Pleasure: Painting and Drawing Course

Start: 06 August 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
End: 08 August 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
With Arnold Lowrey

The course will cover the principles of painting in soft pastels (not oil pastel) and how they are applied in landscapes and seascapes. This will include how to paint skies, trees, water and rocks Some aspects of composition and design will also be included.
The course will also be liberally sprinkled with demonstrations and humour.

Recommended List of equipment:-

Set of pastels (dry pastels)
There are a variety of manufacturers (The best are Unison, Winsor & Newton, Smincke, Sennelier, Rembrandt).  However, if you are just starting, a box of student quality e.g. Inscribe) are good value.
Avoid the hard pastels like Conte, these have their uses for details but not for large areas.
Sets of suitable colours are available for landscapes, portraits etc
Easel
It is important to  select either a desk or free standing easel that will hold your
painting between 30 degrees and vertically.
Papers
There are a variety of papers available. I use Canson Mi- Tientes, which comes in a range        of colours. There are other makes and surfaces available – Fabriano, Rembrandt, Also there are sandpaper type papers available. These are excellent for holding the pastels but are hard on the bank balance as your pastels will disappear before you eyes!

Bring, also,
a board, some bulldog clips and a few  a few sheets of plain paper to
place between the board and your pastel paper.(to stop any “brass rubbing” effects)
Putty rubber (Kneadable)
Felt tip pen
Rigger   watercolour brush

There will be some papers for sale in the workshop.
