Painting & Drawing

Drawing for Improvers

Start: 30 July 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
End: 01 August 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
With Lynne Gibson

Drawing is the key to most art practice: it develops your hand/eye co-ordination and observation, mark making, tonal and compositional skills! It is also extremely rewarding in its own right.
Artists see the world in a special way. One of the most important drawing skills you will develop is that of observation; it is a skill that has many other applications in everyday life.
Other skills you will develop are practical ones: from how to choose and use your drawing materials to how to compose even the simplest sketch to its best advantage. We will explore a range of drawing materials and techniques, such as the use of negative space, expressive mark making, light and shade, simple perspective, and mixed media.
You will undertake a series of progressive group exercises, culminating on Sunday morning with drawing from a clothed model. There will be short poses and a longer pose for a ‘finished’ drawing in media of your own choice.
Whilst there are many aspects of drawing that can be taught, there is no one ‘correct’ style. You will each be encouraged to develop your own unique style and approach. Don’t worry if you do not know what that is, it is my job to spot it!
The teaching is a mixture of group and individual tuition. The supportive and friendly studio atmosphere of the course will also enable you to learn from one another, and share successes and problems!
On Saturday evening we will look at slides of other artists’ work for inspiration and discussion.
This is a chance for you to spend a weekend concentrating on your work, benefitting from tutor guidance and enjoying the company of other improving artists. Some prior experience of making art would be useful for this course.

Some prior experience is recommended.
Please note that this course includes a supplement to cover material costs.
Please bring notepad and pen.
Please wear suitable clothing.
