Painting & Drawing
Botanical Painting in Watercolour or Gouache
Start: 16 July 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
This course is set out to learn various methods of using Gouache or Watercolour and illustrating a botanical subject successfully. Gouache can be used in different styles. This can either be like a watercolour working light to dark but building up to a more opaque consistency, or dark colours first working highlights on top. It depends on the subject matter as to which way is appropriate and this course will help you look and observe details, mix colour and application techniques. Building up opaque layers is a careful process but is ideal for finely detailed work such as botanical illustration. Whichever medium is used a lot of the course painting will be done using a ‘dry brush’ method. This is a process that allows detail such as leaf veining and fine work to be built up on top of base colours and is an important technique in tight botanical work. Observations and colour mixes are important so you will be encouraged to produce colour mix swatches to help you. This is the best way to progress with colour and to start building on an instinctive knowledge and knowing your way around a palette. The course will have a demonstration to start with before you start painting and from then on tuition will be given on an individual basis MATERIALS LIST :- BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION IN GOUACHE / WARERCOLOUR A selection of colour ranges for which ever medium you will work in.
