"Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose": Its place in British Art

Start: 11 June 2010 at 7:15 p.m.
End: 11 June 2010 at 8:30 p.m.
With Heather Birchall

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose is one of the nineteenth century’s most recognisable paintings, and is, unsurprisingly, one of the best selling postcards in Tate Britain’s gift shop. The Impressionist manner in which it was painted, combined with its sheer scale and complexity has contributed to its appeal to both the exhibition-going public and art historians and curators. It was acquired by the Tate Gallery in 1887 and Sargent, then only thirty-one, was one of the youngest living artists to be represented in the national collection.

This talk will examine the biography of the painting and investigate its legacy within the story of British art, and within Sargent’s own artistic career as one of society’s most fashionable and sought after portraitists. In addition the talk will explore Sargent’s association with the village of the village of Broadway in the Cotswold hills, the setting for Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, which became a summer colony for a group of vibrant young English and American artists and writers
