The Titanic, Frank Millet and Broadway

Start: 13 June 2010 at 3:00 p.m.
End: 13 June 2010 at 4:00 p.m.
With Hugh Brewster

“You can have no idea of the spaciousness of this ship,” wrote Frank Millet from the Titanic on April 11, 1912.  “[It’s] not a bit like going to sea.
She has everything but taxicabs and theatres.”  This letter to a friend in Broadway, however, would prove to be Millet’s last.  A week later his floating body was pulled from the North Atlantic and identified by the initials on his pocket-watch.

But its ending was not the only thing about the life of Frank Millet that was “titanic.”   He always seemed to find himself in the middle of the great events of his time.  At the age of fourteen he signed on as a drummer boy in the American Civil War.  After graduating from Harvard he decided to study art in Antwerp which gave him a love for the culture and history of the Old World. In 1878 he signed on as a war correspondent during the Russo-Turkish war and was given a medal for his bravery under fire. In 1885 he was captivated by a small village in the Cotswold hills and rented a house on the green.  Soon an artist’s colony was formed around the Millet house in Broadway – a group that included John Singer Sargent, Henry James, Edmund Gosse and Lawrence Alma-Tadema.

In a fascinating slide talk, Titanic author and historian Hugh Brewster tells the story of both the  “unsinkable” liner and the famous artist from Broadway who was one of its victims.  Suitable for all ages.
