“…Two roads diverged in a wood and I –
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
From ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost (1874-1963)

What happened to the famous American poet, Robert Frost, when he came to England in 1912 certainly “made all the difference.” His first poem had been published in his high school newspaper when he was 16 but since then, while working as a farmer and a teacher, only a dozen of his poems had been published in 22 years. He came to England to write, but soon after his arrival he found a London publisher. David Nutt published his first collection, "A Boy’s Will", in 1913, and "North of Boston" in 1914.

Frost met many well-known writers and intellectuals, including most of the Georgian Poets. When he lived in Dymock, Gloucestershire, he was friendly with Wilfrid Gibson and Lascelles Abercrombie, and is thus one of the Dymock Poets (see "Once They Lived in Gloucestershire: A Dymock Poets Anthology", edited by Linda Hart). Frost’s books were well reviewed in England, and finally he gained confidence in his poetic gift. Some of Frost’s most famous poems, such as ‘Mending Wall,’ were written in here. He met Edward Thomas and they became close friends. It was due to Frost’s encouragement that Thomas began writing poetry, and ‘The Road Not Taken’ was inspired by his friendship with Thomas.

After the outbreak of World War I Frost returned to America. The New York firm of Henry Holt soon reprinted A Boy’s Will and North of Boston. Frost’s homecoming was hailed as a literary sensation. During the next 40 years he received the Pulitzer Prize four times and was awarded honorary degrees from over 40 universities, including Cambridge and Oxford.
