Gluck, Le cinesi and Mozart, Apollo and Hyacinth

On Sunday 5 July, 7.30pm Bampton Classical Opera appears at the Cheltenham Music Festival for the first time with a staged double-bill of rarities which encompass tragedy, comedy and pastoral love. Gluck’s miniature deftly paints a picture of fashionable rococo chinoiserie with a salutary lesson in how best to alleviate boredom. Mozart’s first opera, written at the age of eleven, is a remarkable and precocious achievement telling of love, jealousy, revenge and metamorphosis amongst the gods.
